Education is expensive and getting more expensive every day. It's a simple fact and it's not going to change any time soon. One of the best things you can possibly do for your children is to have a plan in place to pay for their higher education. The folks at Edward Jones can help.

School spirit will soon take center stage today at Edward Jones offices nationwide. Today is "Save for Education Day," a firm-wide holiday named after the 529 Plan, a popular college saving tool. Throughout the day, Edward Jones associates will dress in attire from their favorite colleges.

Eight in 10 families do not have 529 plans for their children's future expenses, Edward Jones Financial Adviser Michele Rohde said in a company news release to the Victoria Advocate. The company hopes to build awareness of the options available to pay for education. The 529 plan is one of those options and includes tax advantages, flexibility and control, according to the release. Withdrawals are federally tax-free when used for qualifying expenses and can go toward eligible colleges and universities, the release said. The account owner also retains control of the account.
