This just isn't supposed to happen in South Texas. The Texas Zoo will be closed Tuesday because of the cold temperatures, Executive Director Amanda Rocha told the Victoria Advocate. Zookeepers will be on hand, though, to tend to the animals' needs, and precautions will be taken such as turning on heat lamps and laying hay or blankets in the animals' bedrooms, she said. "Since we are a nonprofit, if people aren't coming in the gate, we are losing money, so we have to be smart and balance," Rocha said. "Donations of blankets, kennels and stuffed animals are always appreciated. The biggest concern is the water pipes because they are old."

To donate, visit the Texas Zoo's gift shop at 110 Memorial Drive in Victoria or call the zoo at 361-573-7681.
