The Top 7 took the stage again tonight (April 18) on ‘American Idol,’ and this time they had to do two songs: The first, a post-millenium hit and the second an older, more soulful song. Taking on the challenge in full, country hopeful Skylar Laine bit off Lady Gaga‘s ‘Born This Way (Country Road Version).’ Spanning the gap between the country world and the pop realm, Laine brought it once again this week.
If there’s one thing ‘American Idol‘ seems to love as much as discovering the newest talent, it’s inviting their alums back for a moment in the spotlight. It’s always so incredible to how performers who were once anxious hopefuls develop into such poised, self-assured stars in no time. Next week, the past ‘Idol’ winner who will be coming back to show off how he’s changed in a year is Scotty McCreery, and he’ll be joined by rap princess Nicki Minaj.
All three ‘American Idol‘ judges agreed that 18-year-old Skylar Laine got off to a rough start singing ‘Shameless’ by Billy Joel (later recorded and made popular by Garth Brooks). By the time the Mississippi-born singer reached the stage and the chorus however, it was as good as anybody’s performance on Wednesday night.
Casey James’ personality shines through during each song on his self-titled debut project, and not just because the lyrics are mostly ripped from his pre and post-’American Idol’ life. It’s his laid-back demeanor that fans find so charming. In just a few minutes, one feels like the guitar slinger from Texas has figured out how to keep pace with the world. Never too slow. Never too fast. Always on the beat.

Whatever you think of television's "American Idol", you have to admit they have produced some very talented performers in the past. From Kelly Clarkson to Carrie Underwood to Scotty McCreery and all the rest. The show has accomplished even more than it set out to accomplish.

Well, here we go again. Another 'American Idol' winner trying to make a name in country music. I guess it just proves how country music reaches the common man (and woman) in a way that other genres of music can't.
