Despite the Texas heat, the Kory Kubecka Santa Drive is officially under way. For a Christmas children's cancer fundraiser this big, any head start is a good head start, and this fine organization can certainly use your support this year.

The run was established in 2008, after Linda Bonelli's 16-year-old son, Kory, died from an aggressive form of leukemia. Now, for the sixth year since his passing, Bonelli and others have hosted a fundraiser to raise money for the drive, which happens days before Christmas. Children at Methodist Children's Hospital in San Antonio, and other cancer-stricken children in the crossroads receive a gift from their Christmas list. The items are big, because Kory wanted it that way, says the Victoria Advocate. The organization gives away iPods, TVs, laptops and other big gifts.

This year's fundraiser on Aug. 18 includes and Bike and Hot Rod Fun Run., as well as a live auction, luncheon and entertainment by JT Coldfire and Guadalupe Surfers.

The fundraiser for the 6th annual Kory Kubecka Santa Drive is in La Salle at 2049 Farm-to-Market Road 616 at 10 a.m. on Aug. 18th. The cost is a $25 donation for Bike and Hot Rod Fun Run and $8 for the barbecue plates. Plates include barbecue brisket and sausage plates with potatoes, beans and trimmings.
