Kenny Chesney’s ‘Spread the Love’ Video Shares a Universal Message of Hope

Kenny Chesney‘s hit ‘Spread the Love,’ co-written and recorded with the Wailers, benefits Boston Marathon bombing victims. But the new video spreads a message of hope that’s for anyone in Boston or around the world who’s looking for a little bit of goodness in the world.

When the Boston Marathon bombings shook up the entire nation in April, Chesney created Spread the Love: A Fund for Boston, which pays for prosthetics and post-acute care needed by Boston Marathon bombing victims. It receives proceeds from sales of the track ‘Spread the Love.’

“I was having a day off in Florida when the Boston Marathon bombing happened and I just remember feeling so angry for all those people and wanting to do something to help,” Chesney tells Rolling Stone. “But how do you undo that? It dawned on me – what had been this incredible experience, writing with the Wailers, was something more – an opportunity to heal spirits.”

Now, the song’s video broadens his philanthropic vision, celebrating the people, life, and place that Bob Marley and the Wailers’ music rose from.

The beautiful video was shot during a break on Chesney’s 2013 No Shoes Nation Tour and documents the crooner with Wailers members Carlton Barrett, Alvin ‘Secco’ Patterson, and the rest of the band.

“It was important to me to seek the heart of what those men represent,” Chesney says.”The tremendous love in the Wailers’ music, and hope against often unthinkable odds. In spite of the hardships, Bob Marley was always about hope… and love… and that is what makes this music endure. If this video can give people a glimpse of where it comes from, the things that is made of, then I think we’ve deepened what ‘Spread the Love’ is about, and reminded people of the amazing men who created these songs.”

The video begins with children of the island singing, and their sweet voices are truly touching. Documented throughout are the local population going about their daily routines, dancing, playing, and hanging out with Chesney, with footage of the singer and the Wailers interspersed throughout.

It’s the perfect way to ‘spread the love’ of music, diversity, and hope, especially in this holiday season full of goodwill and cheer.
