Jo Dee Messina Diagnosed With Cancer
According to the Facebook letter, Messina's cancer diagnosis came "recently;" although a specific timeline is not given, the note mentions that "it has been a trying summer." As the letter explains, Messina "has built a close relationship with her fans" throughout the years, so she and those in her inner circle felt it was time to let her fans and followers know.
"As many of you know, Jo Dee is a believer who feels blessed to be surrounded by the love of God -- a love that has brought her the inner peace. On her lowest of low days, she has been able to see God's hand at work and feel His love as she continues her walk," the letter reads. "It is because of our Father's love that she has been able to find the beauty in the days that could have brought her the most fear, gratitude in moments that most would call unfair, and companionship during times she might feel the loneliest."
The experiences that Messina has had since her cancer diagnosis have, according to the letter, inspired a song called "Here," written with producer Seth Mosley -- with whom Messina has been working in the studio -- and Mia Fieldes. Of the experience, Mosley says, "God is going to use her and her story to intercept people in their pain and remind them that He is near."
Specific details of Messina's treatment plan are not yet known, but treatments will begin this fall. The singer is postponing all tour dates after Oct. 7 and taking the fall semester off from her studies at The King's University. Team JDM promises to keep fans updated.
Messina released her debut studio album, a self-titled project, in 1996; her last studio release, Me, came in 2014. Her best-known singles include "Heads Carolina, Tails California," "I'm Alright" and "My Give a Damn's Busted." Messina celebrated her 47th birthday on Aug. 25.
