Jason Aldean and Lee Greenwood Surprise Charlie Daniels Onstage at Concert for Veterans
Daniels was performing his Scholarship for Heroes concert in conjunction with Lipscomb's Yellow Ribbon Enhancement Progam. That program helps veterans with continuing education by matching the costs of tuition and fees for in-state schools. Chris Young and the bluegrass group the Grascals made return appearances at the event, which also featured Keni Thomas, Bleach and Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Sparky Matejka.
The event also featured a presentation with Mary Byers, the president of Gold Star Mothers, Inc., an organization composed of mothers who have lost sons or daughters who were serving their country.
“The motto for the USO is ‘until they all come home.’ Last night's event at Lipscomb addressed the fact that many did not come home,” Greenwood says in a press release. “I'm proud to have been a part of this event and congratulate my friend Charlie Daniels for being a leader in our Nashville community.”
Daniels is a longtime supporter of the U.S. military, and he hopes his efforts will help bring attention to the plight of returning veterans who have a hard time acclimating to civilian life. “We have so many heroes whose needs fly below our radar,” he said. “This shouldn’t be happening and this event is helping to make sure it doesn’t.”
