Russell Cain is turning 65, and in honor of his birthday, the longtime Port Lavaca realtor is hosting a golf scramble to benefit the Calhoun County Humane Society. Cain, a devoted animal lover, told the Victoria Advocate he decided to host this event to encourage people to donate both their money and their time to the humane society. "I have 10 dogs and four cats, and I got them all from the humane society," he said. "It's a big part of Calhoun County, and we need to keep this animal shelter active."

The event begins with a breakfast at 7:30 a.m. Saturday. The golf scramble begins at 9 a.m. at the Hatch Bend Country Club, 579 Meadowview Lane, Port Lavaca. The golf scramble will be followed by a buffet lunch at 11 a.m. A bagpipe player and a singer will be on hand for the festivities, Cain said.

When planning his birthday celebration, Cain said he couldn't think of a better way to commemorate it than to give back to the animal shelter, a place that gives animals a chance. "We'd like to save all the animals, but we can't, so we have to save the ones we can," he said.
