Free medication Disposal in Halletsville
The Health Ministries of Hallettsville and Lavaca Medical Center are sponsoring a free drive-thru medication disposal from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday in the medical center parking lot. Barb Koehn, chairwoman of the board with the Health Ministries, said their top priority is to ensure the safety of the community. “Many residents are burying or flushing it down the toilet,” Koehn, a licensed nurse, told the Victoria Advocate. “Eventually, that goes into our water table.”
Koehn, along with volunteers, will be accepting medication, prescribed or over-the-counter, to be incinerated. Medications should be kept in the original bottles, she said, so they can be categorized as controlled and noncontrolled substances. All names will be crossed out, and no information will be recorded from the disposal, she said. Any form of needle should be turned in to volunteers in a sturdy container, Koehn said. “We just want to get it out of the house and protect children and save people from taking old, expired medications,” she said.
