Chris Stapleton is used to commanding attention with his vocal performances, and his performance of "Either Way" during the annual UMG lunchtime showcase at CRS 2016 was no exception.

"I’m gonna play something not on the record," the reigning CMA Awards Male Vocalist of the Year told the crowd of radio programmers, broadcasters and journalists assembled at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on Tuesday (Feb. 9). "It’s about time for me to think about making another one pretty soon. My wife always liked this song, so I’m going to try it out on you guys, if that’s okay."

"Either Way," written by Stapleton along with Tim James and Kendell Marvel, originally appeared on Lee Ann Womack's Call Me Crazy record. With lines such as, "We go work, we go to church / We fake the perfect life / I'm past the point of give a damn / And all my tears are cried / We can just go on like this / Say the word, we'll call it quits / Baby, you can go or you can stay / I won't love you either way," the poignant song is a perfect example of Stapleton's philosophy for his music.

“… If I wrote a song, it doesn’t bother me to re-record it, and it doesn’t bother me if somebody else records it,” Stapleton says. “I don’t feel like songs should be hoarded. I don’t feel like one’s tainted if somebody else does it. That’s the mark of artistry — take a song that’s maybe even a really popular song and do it your own way. I think that’s cool.”

Stapleton's debut solo album, Traveller, has sold more than one million copies since his triple win at the 2015 CMA Awards. It is available for download on iTunes.
