Science: Drummers’ Brains Are Actually Different

Being a drummer, I've heard all of the jokes. I've also been told at times that my brain wasn't "quite right." Well, according to a scientific study, it's apparently true...but in a good way. I've always tried to be a problem-solver, and this study shows that trait is part and parcel with being able to lay a solid groove "in the pocket." But, hey...don't take my word for it; read the article and see why I have just gotten a nice, big shot of self-esteem.

Ham Radio Gaining New Respect

With smart phones, computers, and even landline telephones relying more and more on the Internet, what happens in a disaster that damages cell towers and other infrastructure?

Amateur radio operators spring into action. A method of communication--once thought to be dying off due to the increasing speed and popularity of the World Wide Web--is gaining new respect and unprecedented growth, especially in situations where the only available means of emergency communications is good "old-fashioned" ham radio.

Video: Softwheel Acrobat Reinvents the Wheel

This is fascinating! I have a family member who was--for a time--mostly confined to a wheel chair, due to spinal nerve damage. Every bump and jolt would cause him a lot of pain. The design of the large wheels on the wheelchair shown in this video just might eliminate a lot of that problem. It's another example of how engineering continues to evolve in ways that can make our quality of life just that much better.

Science: Guitar Players’ Brains Are Actually Different

I've been a professional musician (singing drummer) since I was 16 years old. Over the years, I've had the pleasure of sharing stages with some wonderfully talented musicians. Now, some musicians are flaky, some are temperamental, and some have rather inflated egos; but most have been good folks, overall. Fairly early in my musical career, I formed the opinion that lead guitar players are just "wired up" differently than most other musicians.

A GREAT Explanation of What It’s Like to Have ADHD

Although I've never had an "official" diagnosis, those who know me know that I pretty much "fit the profile" of one with ADD. The "hyperactive" part is probably not applicable to me, but I can tell you after I read this, I thought, "Finally! Someone who 'gets' what goes on in my head!" Check it out, and see if you agree!

Lecture: Ancient DNA by Dr. Kelly Graf

Fascinating stuff! The ancient skeleton of a child was discovered near the village of Mal’ta in south-central Siberia in the late-1920's. A recent DNA analysis of the skeleton, believed to be 24,000 years old, has shown that the Mal’ta child’s people were ancestors of modern Native Americans, suggesting First Americans came directly from Siberia.

Anyone Can Be A Ham!

I've written several posts here about my hobby of amateur radio (aka "ham" radio). It's a hobby for anybody interested in communications (emergency and otherwise), electronics, technology, of just having fun! Age, gender, or having a disability need not keep you from getting your amateur radio license, and joining in on the fun! Take, for example, a third-grader from Lumberton, TX (near Beaumont), who recently obtained her ham license!
