“Jolene” As You’ve Never Heard Dolly Parton Sing It Before

In late-1973, Dolly Parton was coming out from under the shadow of her long-time mentor and duet partner, the late Porter Wagoner. She released a haunting song about a woman trying to keep her man from leaving her for another woman named "Jolene." The song became a Number One smash in early-1974, and Dolly's solo career took off. "Jolene" has since been covered numerous times by other artists, but you've probably never heard it done quite like this! Here is Dolly's original 1973 RCA Victor recording,

Carrie Underwood, ‘See You Again’ – Lyrics Uncovered

When Carrie Underwood, Hillary Lindsey and David Hodges sat down to pen a few songs for 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader,' they thought their tune 'See You Again' might get picked up by the show's producers. In the end, the crew opted for a different song -- and that worked out just fine for Underwood, who felt that the 'See You Again' lyrics were a perfect fit for her latest album.

American Young, ‘Love Is War’ – Song Review

There's an easy sweetness to American Young's harmonies. On their debut single 'Love Is War,' the duo does more than just mirror one another. Jon Stone and Kristy Osmunson are two distinct, yet compatible halves of a truly unique piece of country fruit.

Luke Bryan, ‘Crash My Party’ – Album Review

Luke Bryan plays it safe on 'Crash My Party,' his new album and the follow-up to the tremendously successful 'Tailgates and Tanlines.' With the exception of the infusion of hip-hop on two songs, there is little to differentiate the two projects.

Dierks Bentley, ‘I Hold On’ – Song Review

The familiar shuffle that has held down so many of Dierks Bentley's best songs is back in a brand new way on 'I Hold On,' the new single from the upcoming 'Riser' album. Instead of a locomotive guitar, it's the bass that drives this uptempo track about love, faith and family.

Vince Gill and Paul Franklin, ‘Bakersfield’ – Album Review

It's almost unfair to call 'Bakersfield' a Vince Gill and Paul Franklin album, because there are so many other skilled musicians who add an important solo, fill or backbeat to the 10-song project. Often when so much talent fills a room, egos bump like elephants at feeding time. But there's space for everyone on this project.

The Band Perry, ‘Don’t Let Me Be Lonely’ – ToC Critic’s Pick [Listen]

'Don't Let Me Be Lonely,' the third single from the Band Perry's 'Pioneer' album, is thematically similar to their biggest hit, but few will confuse this song with 'If I Die Young.' The latest track may not be as instantly catchy, but it's every bit the sharp songwriting effort the cut from the trio's debut album was.

Austin Webb, ‘Slip on By’ – Song Review

Austin Webb's soulful new ballad 'Slip on By' will catch you off guard if you let it, and that's not such a bad idea. Webb sings a familiar, but not overdone, lesson about appreciating every moment we have on this Earth.

Brad Paisley, ‘I Can’t Change the World’ – Song Review

'I Can't Change the World' is Brad Paisley's anthemic ballad from his 'Wheelhouse' album. As a vocalist, he rarely soars like he does on this sonically complex, but lyrically simple love song. His performance as a singer and guitarist actually overshadows the strength of the song.
