Happy National Radio Day!

You're probably unaware of the fact that today, August 20th, is "National Radio Day."

Yes, the medium that started all electronic media to come after, has its own "national day." From Marconi's first transatlantic transmission of the Morse code letter 'S' ("..." or, dit-dit-dit) in 1901, to today's many choices for music, talk, sports, etc., radio is still the majority of peoples' choice for entertainment and up-to-the-minute news and weather reports.

Pivo and Kolaches, Cerveza and Tamales

While I was not 'raised' on Polka music (as so many here in South Texas have been), I must say I had a blast playing at the 3rd annual (and my 2nd-ever) Polka show at the Flag City Opry last night! Man, when you've got 3 or 4 horns (trumpets/saxes) playing along with the band, it sounds HUGE! I've come to realize that Czech/German Polka, Mexican Norteño, and much of Western Swing are all rooted in that same, strong, danceable 2-beat rhythm; with the occasional waltz thrown in so dancers can catch their breath! Music--in any language--feeds the soul!

10 Reasons To Drum For Your Health

You may (or may not) know that I have been a professional singing drummer since I was in high school. While to some, we drummers sit on a seat (known in drumming lingo as a "throne;" please keep your jokes to yourself!), most drumming requires a fair amount of physical and mental abilities. I happened to see a link to this article on Facebook; it pretty well confirms what I and other drummers have known for a long time: drumming is good for your health!

Pettit Brothers and Chicken Poop Bingo Return to Schroeder Dance Hall

Yes, you read that correctly: starting July 27th--and every Sunday beginning at 3:00 p.m.--Chicken Poop Bingo returns to Schroeder Dance Hall. The Petit Brothers will be playing as well on stage inside the hall. With the bingo you purchase one or more random tickets pulled from the hat at either 1 or 2 dollars, and the chicken is in a cage where the floor has numbered squares. Wherever the chicken does his "business" on that number, the holder of that ticket with the matching number wins the money from that round's ticket purchases. Depending on the chicken, there are 3 planned "rounds."

Man Trapped Overnight at Vegas Airport Shoots Hilarious Music Video

This is fast becoming the hottest viral video on the web, and it's one of the best. Here's the story behind Richard Dunn's hilarious self-shot, self-edited video made to the tune of "All By Myself," by Celine Dion.

Caught overnight at Las Vegas' McCarran Airport with practically no one else around, Richard Dunn could have found many ways to pass the time until his flight in the morning. Instead, he put his trusty iPhone to work and made this hilariously cheesy music video for Celine Dion's 1996 cover of "All By Myself."

Skeeter to Guest on the Refugio Country Opry

I'm very excited (and honored) to have been asked to be a featured performer at the Refugio Country Opry show tonight. This is the first time I've been invited to perform on this particular show; and while I'm the drummer for the Flag City Opry Band in Edna, and frequent emcee at the Crossroads Country Opry show in Victoria (where I get to sing a couple of songs, too), this is a first for Yours Truly. I enjoy the occasional opportunity to step out from behind the drums and sing in front of a great band like this one!
