NBC’s new musical drama ‘Smash’ premiered on Monday night, taking in the story of what it takes to make it in a Broadway musical. Next Monday, on the second episode of the show, actress Megan Hilty (from ‘Wicked’) will perform a Broadway-style rendition of Carrie Underwood‘s ‘Crazy Dreams,’ according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Hilty, who plays a character named Ivy on the show, will cover the song from Underwood’s 2007 record ‘Carnival Ride’ in an attempt to score a role as Marilyn Monroe in a musical. She’s fiercely competing against singer-actress Katherine McPhee‘s character Karen, both simultaneously trying to win the favor of their director Derek (played by Jack Davenport).

Hilty’s version of the song, which you can listen to below, is slowed-down and piano-driven, slightly reminiscent of the beginning of ‘Seasons of Love’ from ‘Rent.’ The singer sounds wide-eyed and emotive, quite a change from Underwood’s country flare and sass. Nevertheless, it’s a great version worth taking a listen to.

Underwood can enjoy watching the new spin on her song on national television just one day after she makes an appearance at the 2012 Grammy Awards, performing a duet with Tony Bennett on ‘It Had to Be You.’ The lovely duet was featured on Bennett’s ‘Duets II,’ which came out in September.

Catch the next episode of ‘Smash’ on Monday at 10PM ET on NBC.
