The NCAA basketball tournament is wide-open in a way that no other major American sporting event is. Ryan Kitching’s mom had been nagging him to clean his room, as moms tend to do. When the 19-year-old from Midlothian, Scotland finally relented and attacked the mess, he found 12 old lottery tickets.
