Everybody loves a good mystery, but not everybody gets a chance to meet a great mystery author. Your chance is this Sunday in the Bronte room at the Victoria Public Library. Mystery author Dean James will be the guest speaker at the Friends of the Victoria Library annual meeting at 2 p.m. Sunday.

In addition to his writing career, the Victoreia Advocate reports that James is the associate director of collection development at the Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library. He co-wrote his first book, "By a Woman's Hand." with fellow librarian Jean Swanson. It was published in 1994.  A second edition followed two years later. James and Swanson collaborated on two further projects, "Killer Books" and "The Dick Francis Companion." He has co-authored or co-edited six works of mystery reference and one short story anthology. His first novel, "Cruel as the Grave" was published in 2000. Since then he has published 14 more novels, writing under his own name and the pseudonyms Jimmie Ruth Evans and Honor Hartman.

In August 2010 he launched a new series under the name Miranda James, and the first book under this name, "Murder Past Due" spent four weeks on the extended New York Times bestseller list for mass market paperbacks. The second book in the series, "Classified as Murder," published in May, made the list for a week. The latest book, "File M for Murder," debuted on the bestseller list at 19. A fourth book in the series will be out in early 2013.

The public is invited to hear James speak in the Bronte Room at the library after a brief business meeting. James' books will be available for purchase and signing after his presentation. Refreshments will be served. Admission is free. For more information call 361-485-3302.
