The City of Victoria is accepting applications for its eighth Citizens Academy. The academy is a free, nine-week program designed to help Victoria residents learn about their city government. The Victoria Advocate reports the course is a series of presentations, tours and demonstrations by city departments. These presentations cover the basic departmental functions and goals. The presentations are followed by a question and answer session.

A meal and drink are provided at each session.

The 2014 Citizens Academy will be Jan. 9 to March 6 from 6 to 8:15 p.m. Thursdays.

Most Citizens Academy sessions will be in Room 204 at 700 Main Center. Other sessions will be at city facilities including the Victoria Public Library, the Surface Water Treatment Plant, Police Department, Emergency Operations Center and the Fire Training Facility. Participants will also have an opportunity to attend a City Council meeting.

Applicants must apply online for the class by Jan. 3. The academy is free to Victoria residents 21 years and older. The class is limited to 20 participants. Call 361-485-3110 for information or apply online at victoriatx.org.
