‘Rio’ Repeats at Weekend Box Office

The kids’ animated movie, featuring the voices of Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg, took the number one spot for the second weekend in a row, earning an impressive $28.6 million on over 3,800 screens. Since its release last weekend, the movie has grossed $81.3 million and counting.
Close behind ‘Rio’ was the latest movie from Tyler Perry, ‘Madea’s Big Happy Family.’ Despite mediocre reviews, the film still managed to pull in $25.8 million for a solid second-place finish.
Also finishing strong were the Robert Pattinson vehicle ‘Water for Elephants,’ which drew $17.5 million, slightly higher than some were predicting, and ‘Hop,’ which crossed the $100 million mark thanks to a $12.5 million weekend.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t all good news: ‘Scream 4′ dropped 62 percent from last weekend, earning just $7.5 million. To date, the movie has earned just $31. 2 million, which is a little less than what ‘Scream 3′ earned in its opening weekend, in 2000. Ouch.
